Old Shore Vineyards - Estate Vineyard
Turkey Nest Vineyard
The northern slope and low elevation made this a perfect location for growing Pinot Gris. The Turkey Nest vineyard receives protection from an adjacent tree line and was named after the wild turkeys found nesting in its vines.
The Pinot Gris vines in this north-facing vineyard grow in sandy loam and clay soils. Nearby stands the historic Old Shore barn, which in centuries past held working horses and cattle. The refurbished barn now serves as an outbuilding for viticulture equipment.
This Pinot Noir vineyard sits at the highest elevation within OSV’s 65-acre estate. The soils in this vineyard transition to sand and as the hill rises the vines are exposed to maximum sunlight. Adjacent to the farm home, this area receives a daily visit by Sofia, the OSV vineyard dog.
Tree Line East Vineyard
Old Shore’s smallest vineyard block is situated east of a historic tree line and receives morning and early afternoon sun. This south-facing location is protected from the western winds by the adjacent stand of cherry trees.
Tree Line West Vineyard
Located west of the tree line, this acreage has been terraced to allow planting on the steep hillsides. The vineyard has sun exposure from three directions, making this an ideal location for growing Pinot Noir.

The People - Vineyard Manager
Michael De Schaaf
A native of Southwest Michigan, Michael de Schaaf’s love for the land and farming was instilled at an early age by his grandparents and parents on the family farm in Benton Harbor. Gravitating toward the grapes, he learned the art of viticulture and enology from area wineries and wine growers, and eventually began Lake Michigan Shore Wine Growers LLC, a vineyard consulting company. Michael currently manages more than 40 acres of vineyards throughout the Lake Michigan Shore AVA and is passionate about the area’s excellence in winegrowing. We’re in good hands with Michael – he takes OSV’s viticulture needs very seriously, and he treats the vines as if they were his own. As a result, our wines get the full benefits of his attention and his 15 years of field and cellar experience. And he doesn’t always have his nose in the dirt, either – Michael thrives on keeping our business current, making sure that we’re always employing the latest technologies.
The People - Wine Maker
At Old Shore Vineyards, we find our inspiration from all corners of the globe. In the case of our wine maker, Cornel Olivier, it was Stellenbosch, South Africa. Born and raised among the beautiful vineyards, Cornel worked closely with his grandfather on the family farm, absorbing a lifetime of grape growing and wine making information in the process, and turning his interest into a passion. Cornel graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College with a degree in Viticulture and Wine Science, and went to work for two wineries in the Stellenbosch area, gaining experience in making prestigious wines. His international award winning wines solidified his reputation as a world class winemaker, and in 2001 he took that reputation stateside, setting up winery in Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan. We partnered with Cornel in 2008, after it became clear that his passions and goals were so similar to our own. Working with Old Shore Vineyards in the Lake Michigan Shore AVA has given Cornel an opportunity to create tantalizing wines, unique to our region – and we’ve been the fortunate recipients of his expertise, his vision, and his love of all things wine.
The People - Owners
David and Dannielle Maki
Throughout history, wine has played a role in the moments and experiences that make up our lives – when we’re celebrating a minor triumph or a major accomplishment; or whether we’re simply basking in everyday miracles like a color-splashed sunset and the good fortune of having someone to share it with. At Old Shore Vineyards, we consider it a privilege to be invited to join your experience, whenever, wherever and whatever it may be. We couldn’t be more proud of our beautiful historical acreage and estate, as we embrace the Michigan wine community and prepare our yields for all to share. We’re proud to be a part of the continuum of what we consider one of the most noble professions in the world. But to us winemaking is not only a profession—it’s a passion.
Be inspired. Go explore. That‘s our mantra. That’s what led us to Michigan and Old Shore Vineyards. And we hope it’s that same desire to see the world, to find the next adventure, and to embrace the next experience, that will lead you to our wine and lead our wine to your table.
